Young Engineers Challenges and Competitions

We run a wide variety of national competitions and activities covering ages 7 to 19.  Competitions are an excellent way of engaging students and adding extra excitement to engineering activities and provide wonderful opportunities for students to work together and for engineers to lend their expertise.

We offer advice and support to competition entrants to give them the best possible chance of success in all of our activities. Our competitions and activities are open to all UK based students whether in school, college, home educated, youth groups or clubs.

The Young Engineers Project Team can help you deliver any of our activities either through advice or actually running an activity day for you. In addition we can create, write and prepare a bespoke activity for your school or company, simply contact us to discuss, please be aware that our attendance at events or preparing a bespoke activity does incur a fee!

If you are interested in learning more about our various competitions and activities then please contact us, either to take part, find out how you can support schools in taking part or how you can support Young Engineers in delivering quality STEM activities. Primary Activities (7-11)

Krazy Racers – The Koncept Kar MkII (Primary 7-11)
The aim of this challenge is to show how the design of the body shell on a vehicle makes an impact on speed and functionality. The students work in teams and are tasked with making a model of a passenger vehicle, each team builds one chassis and two totally different body shells. Each body shell is tested on the same chassis for distance and speed: Link to Krazy Racers Primary.

Project Eggs Factor – The Eggtastic Voyage MkII  (7-11)
This fun design and build challenge asks teams of pupils to build a model aircraft along a theme of Space Tourism. The aircraft must be safely launched, carry its passenger – the egg – for the greatest flight distance possible and then land.  Open to all UK schools, youth groups and families, this challenge tests every part of your engineering capabilities, we don’t want an egg splat we want an eggsemplary landing! Link to Project Eggs Factor.

Making Knexions (9-11)
The aim of this new activity is to provide an exciting and useful resource for primary and secondary schools that encourages links between the schools and students. Making Knexions is a team activity that allows the students to undertake a project from planning through to construction. The teams can have set roles, be mentored by older students and discover  together how they can solve a variety of themed design and build activities using K’Nex as a construction tool. Educators receive a full Education Pack.  Link to Making Knexions

Junior Engineers for Britain – K’Nex Challenge (8-11)  (currently not running)
The aim of this challenge is to provide UK primary school children with an introduction to the exciting world of engineering by challenging them to produce a specific design solution for a set problem  and then build the solution using K’Nex!  Link to the K’Nex Challenge

Secondary Activities

Krazy Racers – The Koncept Kar MKII (Secondary 11-14)
The aim of this challenge is to show how the design of the body shell on a vehicle makes an impact on speed and functionality. The students work in teams and are tasked with making a model of a passenger vehicle, each team builds one chassis and two totally different body shells. Each body shell is tested on the same chassis for distance and speed: Link to Krazy Racers Secondary.

Project Eggs Factor (11-16)

Students must work together to design, build, launch and land an aircraft carrying a payload capable of recording their flight and landing. The aircraft must be built to a set of size limitations but can be built out of almost anything so long as a proportion of the model is constructed out of modern materials or technology! The challenge is a great way to learn about aerodynamics and smart and modern technologies! Link to Project Eggs Factor Secondary

Making Knexions (9-11 primary and 12 – 18 secondary)
The aim of this new activity is to provide an exciting and useful resource for primary and secondary schools that encourages links between the schools and students. Making Knexions is a team activity that allows the students to undertake a project from planning through to construction. The Renishaw Engineering Experience 2013 (16-18)
Renishaw and Young Engineers have teamed up to offer a fully subsidised five day package of activities that will give 6 chosen students a unique opportunity to get close to successful engineering-led organisations, meet the people behind their success, and the products that in some way have an impact on all our daily lives.
The experience which is fully escorted is likely to include visits to well known engineering companies, service providers and even heritage sites.  It promises to be an inspiring and potentially life changing experience, but with an element of fun!
The Renishaw Engineering Experience is open to all full-time UK students aged 16-18 and is scheduled to take place in June 2013. Entry is now open and the closing date for your submission is 31 March 2013.
Young Engineers for Britain (12-19)

Young Engineers challenges students to use their imagination to create, design and develop an original idea for a commercially viable device or system that meets a useful need they have identified.  Open to individuals and teams of students up to a maximum of four. With fantastic prizes and opportunities such as an all expenses oaid week long trip to the USA to take part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Link to YEB

Intel ISEF (16-18)
